In the winter time my eyes enjoyed more the extra lumen I get with the Living Room preset and since some days I even watch in Dynamic mode with the iris on slow.
I just enjoy the more punchier colors and brightness right now.
The flicker I had a few times did not return and so far I always was in Eco mode, except for some bright summer evenings where I needed all the light to combat the sun.
I noticed some big dust blobs when I have a black static picture but it is not visible during normal usage.

Fixed the wrong link to the Fujifilm 3D W3 blog.
Passing the 1000 hour mark and everything is bright an without problems.

Passing the 800 hour mark and everything is bright an without problems.
... and a few hours later the 1-2 second brightness pulsating was there again.
I switched from Eco to normal mode for 5 min then back and it was gone again.

After over 500 hours the brightness of my lamp started to fluctuate in a 2 to 10 second interval. Fearing for imminent bulb failure of my Epson EH-TW3200 I searched the Internet and found out that I am not alone with this problem and that it is common with a lot of projectors.
During normal watching it is barely noticeable but if you have a static picture it is quite visible.
One of the solution seemed to be to put the projector out of the Eco mode for a few hours and than it should "burn" itself clear of that problem...

Just when I found this solution after 550 hours the problem went away by itself and I have the feeling that the overall brightness is a bit higher then it was before.

***

After over 400 hours so far there is no problem with the projector or the lamp, but I noticed a very noticeable loss of brightness after passing the 100 to 200 hour mark. I wish some testers would measure the real brightness after 500 hours because that is more the real thing than just the very bright new lamp.
But this is not an Epson problem, every projector lamp looses big time after the first couple hundred hours.
As for maintenance, the air filter gets taken out and vacuum cleaned every 200 hours.

Projectorcentral.com has a good comparison of 8 1080p low price projectors.
Epson represented through the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 (near identical to the TW3200) did quite well and is still unsurpassed in zoom and optical lens shift.
Everybody is talking about shooting the big moon we have now with their camera.
how boring
how about shooting it with the projector?
how you ask?
simple: watch Speed Racer and there you go.
After tinkering with my new Epson EH-TW3200 now for over a week and 65 hours, having tried every possible setting to the max and everything in between I have found my optimal setting. Just read the blog and you will know how to optimize your projector too.
No worries, you can not hurt your Epson while adjusting and there is always the DEFAULT button to get things back to where it was set up by Epson. If you go over board a bit like I did with Gamma Color Tone 2 the you will notice in some scenes that something looks not right. In my case it was on Fringe when Walter´s hair just did not looked right. So I dialed Gamma Color Tone 2 a bit back until the hair looked normal again but I had still enough shadow detail left.
Wow - we just got a response from Epson Spain and they confirm the 3 year warranty on the lamp up to 4000 hours! That is the full life time of the bulb, but then my NEC VT had 3000 hours in eco and was still working good with over 6500 hours...

Windows Media Center was my favorite HTPC program until I tried to view my photos with it and wanted to zoom in. They take the screen resolution and just use digital zoom if you want to zoom in, I hoped that this would change in Windows 7 but sadly no it did not.
A year ago I found XBMC and fell in love with that gorgeous program.
If you want to zoom in with XBMC they use your photo resolution first before they use digital zoom. Looks so much better.

Now let me tell you a bit about what you can do with a nice projector, a HTPC and XBMC.
You heard of famous paintings by Dali and Picasso, but have you heard of The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch?
No?
Bummer - no matter, get the 34 megapixel picture here.
Now get ready for a wild ride, sit back, zoom in and then let the cursor keys do, what people in a museum would love to do. Get up close and personal with one of the most amazing paintings ever. ( If you figure some of the scenes out, let me know in the comments below.)
Gorgeous - if you set it up right so it is optimized for your viewing environment (see my post Epson EH-TW3200 - the right adjustment)

So far, except for 130 hours with the Sony VPL HS10 as an emergency measure after
my second ACER P1265 had to go to repair because off massive mirror failure (one ACER stuck the mirrors in on position the other one in off position) I had only data projectors, since the Home Cinema projectors were just too expensive and not bright enough for the way I watch.
Some pictures I have on the XBMC menu and The Garden of Earthly Delights were altered to brighten the shadows for better detail viewing.
Now with the Epson these pictures do not look so good anymore and I switched back to the unaltered originals.

like this one, where it looks so much better using the original and just having the Gamma CT2 adjsted

So with the Epson EH-TW3200 and my adjustments the details in the shadows are just a delight to discover - after that experience there is now way back to the data projectors.
They were all equal.

I am watching on the big screen since over 25 years and heard, or not, a lot of operating noise from projectors.
My last one before the Epson was a ACER P1265 and this one is quoted 24 to 28-31 dB.

Epson quotes the EH-TW3200 with 22 to 28 dB. but for my ears the Epson is quite a bit louder than the ACER.

The Epson in the lowest noise setting: Cinema, ECO, Iris off and not Ceiling Mount produces still a bit more noise than the Acer in Eco mode.
So I question the 22 dB according to my hearing and some similar forum posts. I think something in the 26 dB area is more correct.

The noise increases in several levels.
Ceiling Mount and x.v Color or Cinema brings on a few rpm and a tiny bit of noise more but still in a quite acceptable range.
Living Room and Dynamic are a fraction louder but no difference in mounting.
Turning off the Eco mode (normal setting for Dynamic) more than doubles the noise.
If you activate the Auto Iris you get a very noticeable mechanical noise what is louder than the projector on max power and brightness.

To understand the dB value it is important to know that dB doubles in intensity every 3 steps.
So 28 dB is 4 times a s loud as 22 dB.

My Epson EH-TW3200 is mounted one meter directly over my head, so the exhaust blows above me. If you have the projector close behind or next to you, it is a good idea to hear before you buy in case you want the Epson not only for movie watching and you find noise irritating.

I would rate the Epson EH-TW3200 from 26 to 34 and with Auto Iris up to 40 dB.
In normal viewing environment no problem, but if it is dead quiet like viewing pictures a bit more noisy than I would like.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3091794648116936980.post-85994065080495355032011-03-13T12:27:00.021+00:002011-03-14T17:29:13.698+00:00Epson EH-TW3200 - the right adjustmentIf you view this post on your notebook, adjust the angle of your screen so you can see a difference between the face of the man and the background also hit F11 for full screen.

So, you read all the reviews, look up all the recommended settings like use only Cinema mode, keep it in Eco mode, set Gamma to 2.3 or 2.4, tweak brightness and contrast a bit, do not Expand the HDMI Video Range and set Epson Super White to on.

The result is a nice picture with deep blacks, good whites and colors.
BUT all the recommended settings above are WRONG.
I had absolutely no detail in the shadows and it reminded me on a wedding photo I once saw.
I tracked it down to give you an idea.

Now I sit here with a highly praised home cinema projector displaying beautiful blacks who try to take over my picture, well at least my shadows and this Epson has much less detail compared to my simple ACER P1265 dlp projector.

OK let´s check everything.

I am using a HP DV5 with a Nvidia 9600 GT and XBMC to play my files
HDMI connection: check
other video player: same results
WDTV: looks even worse
maybe the Nvidia needs to be tweaked:
after 2 hours there is not much more detail I have.
Changing the HDMI video range to 0-255 and Expanding the HDMI Video Range on the Epson brings a bit more, but still not good.
Changing brightness and contrast in XBMC and the Epson EH-TW3200 brings out the shadows a bit but also washes out my picture too much.

Time to forget everything I read and do some intensive testing.
As usual when I do something like that I start to blog about it because then I have all my results in one place and I can share that with some folks who are in the same situation.
And there you have it, the Epson EH-TW3200 insider blog is born.

Every setting back to normal and let the testing begin.

All photos are with the same exposure and ISO setting and the screen quality is better than what you see here. The black is much less gray and the colors are better.

First stop Epson Super White
what is a misnomer since it reduces whites.
It takes away the blinding white and gives you a bit more detail in the white areas.

So what is my optimal setting?
For dark and with some little ambient light:
Cinema, 6500-7500k, HDMI Video Range Expanded, Gamma Custom Color Tone 2 between 10 and 20

For bright viewing situations depending on how bright:
Dynamic or Living room with or without ECO, 6500k, HDMI Video Range Expanded, Gamma Custom Color Tone 2 between 16 and 26

And this is where the Memory function comes in handy what I set up with 3 settings for bright, moderate and very little light and now I have my perfect settings.
Yours will be a bit different, depending on your taste, your player and the amount of light you have and what you watch.
Now double that glass area, pack one part of it behind the thin screen (remember it´s a bed sheet) and to top this off we add a huge window opposite to the screen. The big windows behind the screen have some sun cover.

So I unscrewed my old ACER XGA who had suffered a massive dlp chip failure with getting a couple more mirrors stuck each evening and just came back from warranty repair and with some modifications screwed the Epson on to my trusty projector ceiling mount.
This mount is with me since over 10 years and is the best $7 I ever spend on a mount.
So far it carried 2 NEC VT series, 1 BENQ, 2 ACER and a big Sony VPL-HS10.
I got if from Walmart and it is a speaker wall mount.

My quest for a 3D capable HD projector came to an end after discovering all the problems, incompatibilities, viewing problems, non support of drivers and the manufactures and lack of content.

Searching now for the best full HD projector in the low budged class I found that the Epson 8350 / TW3200 ticked all the right boxes.

On our little island at the west coast from Africa the only store who is carrying this projector is the MediaMarkt - and they were out of stock but had it listed for 1199 Euros.
While passing the time until the projector arrived I discovered a major problem people had with these Epson models especially the 8100.
The Epson bulb had a lot of premature failures.
After reading through the Epson Home Cinema 8100 review where in the comment section a lot of unhappy people posted their frustration about the early defect of the Epson lamp.
Looking at the newer Epson Home Cinema 8350 there were no lamp failures mentioned so far.
Doing more research I found at the avsforum the thread called:
Epson 6100, 8100, 6500ub, 8500ub, 7500ub, 9500ub Post Pre-Mature Lamp Failure here
what confirmed my bad feeling.

One thing most of the owners of these Epson projectors mentioned, was the way Epson handled the premature bulb failure problem. Nearly everyone got a new bulb without cost.
Reading this made the problem look a bit less bad.
A months passed and MediaMarkt got the projector back in stock.
A few days before I noticed that Amazon in Germany who listed the 3200 also mentioned a 3 year bulb warranty limited to max 2000 hours.

Crosschecking with Epson Spain, who would be the supplier for my projector I could confirm the 3 year bulb warranty but neither on the website (2 years warranty on the projector) not in the brochure (3 years warranty on the projector) was any hour limit mentioned.
Well that sounded very promising, so I went out to get me an Epson EH-TW3200 at MediaMarkt.
From the two projectors they had an hour before when I called there was only the open box display model left.
Not a problem but I noticed the price also had been lowered to 999 Euros and MediaMarkt hat an offer for a 100 Euro shopping card for every 500 Euro spend. Hunting through the store I found a pair of ultra cheap earbuds for 1.29 Euros and this is how I got this nice projector for 801.29 Euro.

One of the reasons why all other projectors in the 800 to 1300 Euro price range did not make it was that the Epson has a whopping 2.1 x zoom and using the Projection Calculator it seemed that I finally could get rid of my room extension via a mirror trick ( see picture on top of this post).

After reading the comparison between the 3200 and 3600 I am sure I found the best bang for my Euros.
The Epson EH-TW3200 is 99% identical with the Epson EH-TW3600 which is identical with the Epson Home Cinema 8350.

The warranty situation still seemed a bit unclear, so we tried to get clarification since after unpacking the projector at home Epson had a surprise for me.
After a couple chats with Epson Spain who were not able to answer the simple question:
How many years and / or hours is the warranty of the lamp from the Epson EH-TW3200
we tried Epson UK who confirmed the 3 years max 2000 hours for the UK but mentioned when the projector is in Euroland than there is no hour limit.
Epson Germany confirmed the 3 years 2000 hours max for Germany.
Epson France could not answer the question in the 30 min chat time limit.

2011-3-14
we just got a response from Epson Spain and they confirm the 3 year warranty on the lamp up to 4000 hours!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com10
